Elzbieta passed away unexpectedly
at her beloved home in Colonia el Caloso, Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico, on
27 March 2024. She was born in Buffalo, New York, and lived in New York, Massachusetts,
Florida, Alaska, and Oregon, before moving in 2016 to Mexico.
Before striking off on her own as
a handcrafted glass beads artisan, Elzbeads,
Betty worked in Portland, Oregon, as an accountant for Blue Bell Snack Foods
and then later for Rodda Paint. Although Betty was unable to take that “one
last trip to Paris” she so greatly desired, she visited many places around the
world: Cook Islands, Hong Kong, China, France, Spain, Iceland, Netherlands,
Brazil, Panama, among many others.
Although travel was likely at the top of her
fun-activities list, she also adored eating out, dancing, and music, and
frequented live music venues in Portland and Puerto Vallarta. She had fond
memories of her dachshunds, George and Lilly.
Elzbieta was preceded in death by
her parents, Michael Gerla and Dorothy Helen (Urbaniak) Gerla, and son Michael
Hugh McCauley. She is survived by her brother, Philip Joseph Gerla (Janet),
Kernersville, North Carolina, and maternal aunt, Florence Marquardt (Robert),
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, along with four nephews, two nieces, a dozen grand
nieces and nephews, and numerous cousins. In addition, many close friends
scattered between Portland and Puerto Vallarta will miss the time, laughter,
and love they’ve shared.
